Ubuntu Karmic Koala

The Ubuntu team has released the 2nd alpha of the upcoming Ubuntu Karmic Koala (Ubuntu 9.10). This release does give some insight into plans for the final release, scheduled for October this year.

Ubuntu Karmic Koala

This release features the latest Linux kernel, version 2.6.30 & Gnome 2.27.1. The Ext4 filesystem is now used as the default filesystem. Also included by default is GRUB 2 (new default bootloader).

Some new improvements will be a a new kernel mode setting feature which should reduce video mode switching flicker at booting & will speed up suspend & resume processes. The team also aims at a 10-second boot time.
